"Better Is One Day" Lyrics

How lovely is Your dwelling place,
Oh Lord Almighty
My soul longs and even faints for You
For here my heart is satisfied,
within Your presence
I sing beneath the shadow of Your wings

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

One thing I ask and I would seek,
to see Your beauty
To find You in the place Your glory dwells

My heart and flesh cry out,
For You the living God
Your spirit's water for my soul
I've tasted and I've seen,
Come once again to me
I will draw near to You
I will draw near to You

Reflection:

The song Better is One Day is a song that relates to us just how great building up the kingdom of God is because when we are doing that, we are with God. Being with God and doing what God asks from us, which ranges from avoiding sin and doing good to the giving of our time in various ministries, is better and more joyful for us than doing anything else. You see, God knows us better than anyone else. He knows us better than our spouses, parents, or children know us. So to do the will of God brings genuine love and happiness to the individual. As St. Augustine said so eloquently in the fourth century, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” When we are doing God’s will on earth, our hearts will be restless because we are then doing what God created us for and that is where we will find true joy, happiness, and peace. Then we can sing with Matt Redman and say that it is truly better to spend one day with God than a thousand elsewhere, even a tropical island.

Psalm 139:14 – “I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you know.”

John 15:16 – “It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.”
