"Redeemed" Lyrics:

Seems like all I could see was the struggle
Haunted by ghosts that lived in my past
Bound up in shackles of all my failures
Wondering how long is this gonna last
Then You look at this prisoner and say to me "son
Stop fighting a fight it's already been won"

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I'll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, now I'm not who I used to be
I am redeemed, I'm redeemed

All my life I have been called unworthy
Named by the voice of my shame and regret
But when I hear You whisper, "Child lift up your head"
I remember, oh God, You're not done with me yet

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I'll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, now I'm not who I used to be

Because I don't have to be the old man inside of me
'Cause his day is long dead and gone
Because I've got a new name, a new life, I'm not the same
And a hope that will carry me home

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I'll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, 'cause I'm not who I used to be

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I'll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, yeah, I'm not who I used to be
Oh, God, I'm not who I used to be
Jesus, I'm not who I used to be
'Cause I am redeemed
Thank God, redeemed

Reflection:

There’s an old saying in the Church that goes like this: “When the devil reminds you of

your past, remind him of his future.” Whenever we dwell on past sins, past mistakes

we’ve made, it truly is the devil that’s trying to hold us hostage and keep us from living

in the freedom that Christ promises us. God knows we are sinners and we are prone to

fall, but that’s why we have the sacraments, especially the sacrament of the Eucharist

and the sacrament of reconciliation. These sacraments are given to us as a gift from

Christ to help us on the path to holiness and being free from past sins. Whenever we

fall into sin, and everyone does because we are human and no one is immune to sin,

we need to make an act of contrition and return to God. Jesus died for all our sins. We

have been forgiven. We cannot allow the bondage of sin from keeping us from living in

the freedom that Christ has offered us. As the song says, “I am redeemed, you set me

free. So I’ll shake off these heavy chains.”

Psalm 86:5 – “Lord, you are good and forgiving, most merciful to all who call on you.”

1 Peter 1:3 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great

mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from

the dead.”

Romans 6:22-23 – “But now that you have been freed from sin and have become slaves

of God, the benefit that you have leads to sanctification and its end is eternal life. For

the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
